"Contraire" is a new, avant-garde painting style invented by Cary Kent, which explicitly subverts traditional coloring and drawing sequences.

The Core Concept of Contraire

In a traditional drawing, an artist outlines a shape with lines first and fills it in with color later. Contraire completely reverses this dynamic:

• The artist applies bold, quick strokes of color first onto a blank surface, intentionally leaving negative white space around the colorful strokes.

• The artist then draws the black lines over and around the color.

As Cary notes, the process can feel confusing because you are effectively "drawing with the color, and coloring with the drawing". The color itself dictates where the black lines will go and how thick they need to be.

So why is Contraire different from all other styles?

One of the basic elements of art is the object / color relationship. In all other pictures and all things on earth, the color fits the object, fits the chair, tree, drawing, etc. Even in the abstract paintings where Pollock poured paint out of a can onto the canvas, the outside of each drip became the drawing.

You remember--“Keep your crayons inside the lines,” they told you, and even if you went outside the lines, the color still defined the image or object (the drawing). This new way of painting is entirely opposite--a complete reversal of the object/color relationship. The color is the drawing and the black drawing is the color.

What Aristotle had to say about color.

Aristotle said that all colors were nothing more than various mixtures of  absolute black and absolute white, and compared the colors to flavors, but people threw his explanation in the trash after Newton's prism experiments. Contraire, however, re-validates this concept psycho-logically, considering color is only a perception anyway. It’s how we perceive waves of energy of various wave-lengths. It seems obvious that the only thing common to all colors and shades of colors is that all of them are lighter or darker.
