Those people having fun and gettin’ drunk in those dark bars. This picture’s like being inside a dimly lit bar. The whole thing about Contraire is...since the object and the color are reversed, instead of drawing an outline of a bar scene and coloring it in, I drew the color (the feeling of being there) in as an outline. The color by itself became the “outline.” Then I “colored” it in with the black. That’s what Contraire’s all about.

My Muse, the woman in the “What the other artists leave out.” I did think about her today, bits and pieces of games played and not played.
One of my emails to her started with, “Trying to combine the words...butter, slather, and muffins into an intelligent morning email for you, and thought about...Did you stick those feet up in the air and think of me?” But I didn’t send it. Too something. Then I did this picture that captured the very essence of her. Looking back, I think I was like the guy at the zoo that sees the do not feed the bear sign but he keeps feeding it anyway until the bear kills him.”

Eighty now and oh boy is that hard to right (I know, think about it.) My personal assets, although many, don’t include money, but I am the ultimate optimistic person. If I was dying tonight at twelve o’clock sharp, I would be happy until the very last moment, just like my dad. Thinking he was dying one day he decided they would find him with a big smile on his face. He sat for thirty minutes in his favorite chair with a big grin and then...Maybe he wasn’t dying, he would go for a physical the next day. Couple years later he died. At the funeral I asked the caretaker how he was going to cover him up. “Little tractor over there.” “You got any shovels?” “Got two.” Started shoveling and my kids joined in, one by one. Funerals have always been a problem for me, but when we finished patting him down...everything was in place, no returning to it over and over in my mind. And a nice letter came from his only remaining sister, saying...that was when her tears came, and looking back, she wished she had picked up a shovel herself.

And in the birdhouse today I thought of when I was twelve and laid the pipe bomb carefully in the creek for my brother who had called from college saying to be very careful taking it to the creek. Walking the quarter mile I had thought of the wasted energy in the bomb and the chance I was taking. As I picked my way through the birdhouse, I remembered the promise I made to myself over fifty years ago. And it came to me that the chance I had taken carrying that pipe bomb was very similar to the one I took by postponing my art career. Death could have ended everything. You don’t think about things like that when you’re young.
Waiting for the next big bang.

Even though I fired the contraire up in 2006, and was preparing to hit the road promoting it, things happened and I stopped and wrote a thick history of my family. Then, after making it through an ex-wife that burned up in a house fire (we were close), a son that committed suicide, and a hip replacement, I decided I better get some recognition on this new way of art before I punched out. And I started throwing some color down and squeezing that sharpie.
But, there’s not enough time for me to go the normal routes, and I never fit in...it seemed like most artists just hung out to pat each other on the back…a self-admiration society. So...it seemed like a top art critic would nail this, but when I looked them up they were all dead (hmm)...So, internet being what it is, here I am, thinking good things will happen.

Well those other artists got some pretty fancy words, don’t they? Those museums, this and that showing. But Me? I just like to make art for you to enjoy, how complicated is that? I’m paintin’ my heart out for you.

In memory of my best friend, Jim Nixon, “Graver”, who passed in 2024. The 22 lever action at top he engraved and gave to me, but it got stolen…the other one is one I took a bad photo of, but it was beautiful in person. I think he was either number one or number two of the best engravers in the world, he could do that bank note engraving better than the mint, even his animals looked 3-d.
